I have taken Spanish courses throughout high school and university, including SPAN 1110 – Introductory Spanish 1 at TRU. While my fluency is not great, my understanding of the fundamentals of the language have helped me navigate many relationships. While in New Zealand, my roommate Hugo and I, spent days bonding over our own efforts to master each other’s languages. I look forward to continuing my efforts to learn the language and the opportunities to apply it. I have aspirations to one day visit Hugo in Spain. At the same time I recognize that language barriers often epitomise failures to engage on a personal level. That, my travels will only be further amplified by a proficiency in the local language. All together, while I am grateful for the experiences my limited Spanish capabilities have afforded me, I look forward to honing these skills and becoming a more globally competent individual.
